Sonos has been busy extending their voice control beyond music control. They have added control for Lutron systems (ranging from consumer Caseta line to high end RA and HomeWorks systems) and Philips Hue. I’ve done some home testing and controls work as advertised. The Lutron controls work as seamlessly as one would expect, with room and individual light control. The Hue commands are a little less robust, requiring the user to specify “turn on/off the lights in <location>” rather than just mentioning the room.

They also announced features upcoming for their new Sonos27 system. Advanced music and scene mood setting will feature, with more general natural language conversation appearing in the September time frame. They will also introduce an MCP feature allowing users to extend their Claude or other GenAI systems with Sonos, and in the future personalized AI assistants will be able to cater to each individual in the household.

With their new CEO who has software management chops dating back to Pandora, it looks like Sonos is committing to a path taking them beyond the days when they brought in third-party voice assistants into their speakers.
